Does traditional landlord insurance cover stays on platforms like Airbnb, Stayz, Booking.com or HomeAway?

Published .

Platforms like Airbnb, Stayz or TripAdvisor have made it possible for anyone to host guests in their house or apartment for stays as short as 1-night, utilising space that might otherwise be sitting empty for that time.

Renting out in this way can make you a short-stay landlord. People may assume that because they are technically a landlord, traditional landlord insurance is the way to go for short-term renting.

However, there are a number of important differences that hosts should be aware of between traditional landlord insurance and short-stay landlord insurance, like ShareCover.

A traditional landlord insurance policy will cover you for an entire year and will typically only insure stays that are longer than 90 days. Considering most stays on platforms like Airbnb, Stayz or TripAdvisor are for less than 90 days, most traditional landlord policies won’t cover you short-stay renting. These types of policies also typically require a documented tenancy agreement before you can purchase the insurance.

ShareCover offers short-stay landlord insurance, which is specifically developed to cater to the needs of short-term renting. It covers stays anywhere from 1 night to 90 days and you can get pay-per-night or 6- and 12-month policies. No tenancy agreements required for these insurance policies. Our short-stay landlord products are designed to protect you and your property from accidental damage, malicious damage, liability, natural perils and theft.

If you want to know more about short-stay landlord insurance and exactly how it can work for you, contact the ShareCover team.
